University of Leeds

Higher Education Institutions

The University of Leeds is a public research university in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, with roots in the Leeds School of Medicine, founded in 1831, and the Yorkshire College of Science, established in 1874, which merged with the medical school in 1884; the combined college joined the federal Victoria University in 1887 before receiving its own royal charter from King Edward VII in 1904. It is the tenth-largest UK university by enrollment and, with more than 68,000 undergraduate applications a year, the fourth-most popular UK university by application volume, and it is a member of the Russell Group. Its alumni include the current UK prime minister Keir Starmer and several Nobel laureates.

FAQs

The University of Leeds says it was established in 1904, so why does this page also describe earlier roots?

The university itself says it was established in 1904, when its first academic disciplines were founded; earlier colleges are its roots.

The university's own About page gives 1904 as its year of establishment, and its history page says the departments of Textile Industries and of Tinctorial Chemistry and Dyeing became the founding academic disciplines of the University of Leeds in 1904. The description on this page also traces the institution back to the earlier medical school and the Yorkshire College of Science, so the 1904 date marks the university as it is formally counted by Leeds itself, not the start of every predecessor college.
