Novelty Effect

Motivation and Affective Theories

The novelty effect is the effect that introducing new elements has on an activity or behavior, describing how something being new can itself raise or otherwise change performance or interest apart from any lasting change in the activity, method or tool involved.

Facts
Core Claim
The novelty effect is a temporary rise in engagement, attention or performance that follows the introduction of something new, such as a new instructional technology, and that fades once the novelty wears off rather than reflecting a lasting improvement in learning. 1
