Competency-Based Curriculum (Kenya)

State Standards Initiative

Kenya's basic education curriculum, introduced in 2017 and rolled out progressively from 2019 by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, replacing the content-heavy 8-4-4 system with a structure organized around measurable competencies, values and core learning areas rather than examination-driven rote content. It restructures schooling into a 2-6-3-3-3 year sequence (two years pre-primary, six primary, three junior secondary, three senior secondary, three university) and places new emphasis on continuous formative assessment alongside a reduced-weight national exam at the end of primary school.

FAQs

Why did Kenya decide to replace the 8-4-4 system?

A countrywide needs assessment found 8-4-4 had become unpopular for putting examinations ahead of other education needs.

Kenya's Institute of Curriculum Development says the decision followed a review of the 8-4-4 system by a team of experts. That review was informed by a countrywide needs assessment, which indicated that the system had become unpopular because it was examination oriented at the expense of other education needs.
