Critical Understanding

Critical, Moral and Equity-Oriented Theories

Critical understanding is a mode of thinking in which a person reaches a defensible position on an idea, issue, or source by reflecting on, analysing, and evaluating different viewpoints, rather than accepting them passively. It is treated as an essential skill for participating in democratic life, requiring students to move from passive reception of information toward independent, analytical judgment and the ability to express informed responses of their own. The concept draws on the tradition of pluralism and is closely linked to Paulo Freire's idea of education for critical consciousness, as well as to John Dewey's account of reflective thinking and to Bloom's Taxonomy's higher-order categories of analysis and evaluation.
