Least Dangerous Assumption

Critical, Moral and Equity-Oriented Theories

The least dangerous assumption is a principle stating that educational decisions about a student should be based on the assumption which, if it later proves wrong, will do the least harm to that student. Developed in 1984 by special-education researcher Anne Donnellan, the principle is applied most often in the education of students with intellectual disabilities and communication disorders, where it favors presuming competence over presuming incompetence when the evidence is inconclusive, on the reasoning that overestimating a student's ability is less damaging than underestimating it. FAQs

What does the least dangerous assumption actually weigh?

It weighs which mistake would do less harm to a student's chance of independence as an adult.

It weighs the consequences of being wrong. Anne Donnellan stated in 1984 that when conclusive data are absent, educational decisions should rest on the assumption which, if incorrect, will have the least dangerous effect on the likelihood that students will be able to function independently as adults. In practice the question is not which assumption is more probable, but which mistake does less damage to the student's later independence.
