POGIL

Constructivist and Situated Learning Theories

POGIL, short for Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning, is an activity based, group learning teaching method that began in 1994 with the goal of improving chemistry education, and has since spread to more than 1,000 American high schools and colleges. Students work in small groups, usually of three or four, with each student taking on a role such as task manager or recorder, while the instructor moves from delivering content to guiding students through a carefully built sequence of questions meant to help them notice patterns and build their own understanding of a concept. The approach is grounded in constructivism, the theory that learners build knowledge actively rather than simply receiving it. The POGIL Project, a nonprofit organization based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, supports the method by training faculty, developing teaching materials, and running workshops and an annual conference.
