Photovoice

Critical, Moral and Equity-Oriented Theories

Photovoice is a participatory research and popular education method in which community members are given cameras to photograph aspects of their own lives and environment, and then use those photographs as the basis for group discussion, critical reflection, and advocacy about the issues the images raise. Developed in the 1990s by public health researchers Caroline Wang and Mary Ann Burris, drawing on the critical pedagogy of Paulo Freire and on documentary photography traditions, the method aims to give people who are often the subject of outside research a direct voice in identifying and communicating their own community's strengths and problems. It has since been used widely in public health, community development, and education settings as a tool for both research and grassroots empowerment. FAQs

What do participants do besides taking photographs in a photovoice project?

The photographer also writes a narrative explaining how each picture relates to the project theme.

Participants photograph anything significant to the project's research themes, such as community concerns, assets, social issues or health barriers. The photographer then writes a narrative about how the picture relates to the project theme. Communities can then use this gathered research to guide the development of solutions and programs.
