Psychomotor Education

Foundational and Developmental Learning Concepts

Psychomotor education, also called psychomotor therapy, is a pedagogic and therapeutic approach that supports a persons overall development by treating the physical, emotional and cognitive sides of a person as connected to each other and to their social surroundings. Practitioners look at how a person expresses themselves through their body as more than a mechanical or purely nervous system process, tracing how patterns of emotional expression form from early childhood experience. The field covers prevention, education, re-education, rehabilitation and research, and serves people of every age. The Aucouturier Psychomotor Practice, founded by the French pedagogists Bernard Aucouturier and Andre Lapierre, is one well known school within the field. FAQs

How did psychomotor therapy become a recognized profession?

It was founded in Germany in the mid-1950s and gained state recognition in France in 1974 and in the Netherlands in 1995.

Psychomotor therapy was founded in Germany in the mid-1950s by Ernst Kiphard, who took the term from the German rhythmic therapist Charlotte Pfeffer. The French government created a state diploma for psychomotor therapists in 1974, and the diploma now takes three years to complete. The Dutch government has recognized psychomotor therapy as a profession within mental health care since 1995, and the European Forum for Psychomotor Therapy was established that same year.
