Anna B. Sfard is a retired Israeli psychologist of mathematics education, focusing on the roles of communication and reification in mathematical reasoning. She introduced commognition, a theory of learning that defines thinking as communicating with oneself, in a 2008 book. She claims that mathematics, like any other domain of knowing, is a historically established discourse and that learning mathematics is the process of becoming a participant in that discourse. She is a professor emerita of Mathematics Learning Sciences at the University of Haifa.
