Grant Wiggins was an American educator who, together with Jay McTighe, developed Understanding by Design, the backward-design framework for curriculum planning, publishing it in 1998 after founding the consulting firm Authentic Education. He held an EdD from Harvard University and a BA from St. John's College, taught secondary school English for fourteen years, and consulted on major reform efforts including the Coalition of Essential Schools and state assessment reforms in New Jersey, New York and Delaware. He died suddenly of a heart condition in 2015 at the age of 64.
