Henry Armand Giroux (born 1943) is an American and Canadian scholar recognized as one of the founding theorists of critical pedagogy in the United States. After six years teaching high school social studies in Rhode Island, he held academic posts at Boston University, Miami University and Pennsylvania State University before becoming the Global TV Network Chair in Communication at McMaster University in 2004. His work applies critical theory and cultural studies to public pedagogy, higher education and youth, drawing on the influence of Paulo Freire, Antonio Gramsci and Michel Foucault.
