Historian and educator
Lennox Honychurch is a Dominican historian, educator, curator and politician born on December 27, 1952, in Portsmouth, Dominica. He wrote foundational works documenting Caribbean history for schools and general readers, including The Dominica Story: A History of the Island, published in 1975, and the regional textbook series The Caribbean People, published in 1995, which brought the history of the Kalinago people and the island's colonial encounters into classroom use across the region. He was largely responsible for compiling the exhibit information for the Dominica Museum in Roseau and has advised on heritage sites elsewhere in the Caribbean, including developing educational programs on sustainable tourism at Fort Shirley. Honychurch also served as a senator in Dominica's House of Assembly from 1975 to 1979 and as Press Secretary to the Government from 1980 to 1981. Beyond his historical scholarship he is recognized as a poet and painter, and in 2018 he received Dominica's highest honor, the Dominica Award of Honour, for his contribution to the island's cultural and historical record.
