Louisa Lumsden

Dame Louisa Innes Lumsden, born in Aberdeen on 31 December 1840 and died in Edinburgh on 2 January 1935, was a Scottish educational pioneer. She was one of the first five students at Hitchin College, later Girton College, Cambridge, in 1869, one of the first three women to pass the Cambridge Tripos in 1873, and the first female resident tutor at Girton from 1873. After teaching classics at Cheltenham Ladies College in 1876 and 1877, she became the first headmistress of St Leonards School in Fife from 1877 to 1882, described as the first school for young women in Scotland modelled on an English public school. She was also the first warden of University Hall at the University of St Andrews, founded in 1896. Lumsden was a non-militant suffrage campaigner, received an honorary LL.D. from St Andrews in 1911 and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1925.
