Lucy Craft Laney (1854-1933) was an American educator who in 1883 founded the first school for Black children in Augusta, Georgia, which grew into the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. She served as the school's principal for fifty years, building it into a major institution for Black education in the American South that trained generations of teachers and students and combined an academic curriculum with industrial and normal (teacher) training.
