Jean-Ovide Decroly, who lived from 23 July 1871 to 10 September 1932, was a Belgian teacher and psychologist born in Ronse. He studied medicine at the University of Ghent, with half a year at the University of Berlin, and later worked with handicapped children at the neurological clinic in Brussels. He founded The Hermitage School in 1907, and the Ecole Decroly in Uccle, Brussels, which reaches from kindergarten to baccalaureate, still follows his pedagogical approach. The Decroly plan concluded that schooling is needed for children to meet their biosocial needs.
