Val D. Rust

Val Dean Rust, born on 28 November 1934, is an American historian and professor of education at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA, where he taught from 1969 to 2008. He grew up in a Latter-day Saint family, taught high school in Utah in the early 1960s, attended Brigham Young University and earned a Ph.D. in education at the University of Michigan in 1967, followed by postdoctoral research in Germany and Norway. He was an assistant professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1967 to 1969, served as faculty chair and director of international programs at UCLA, was president of the Comparative and International Education Society from 1990 to 1991, and co-founded UCLA's Center for International and Development Education. His comparative education scholarship spans more than 45 years and includes The Democratic Tradition and the Evolution of Schooling in Norway in 1989 and The Unification of German Education in 1995.
