Walter Kintsch

Walter Kintsch was an American psychologist, born in Romania in 1932 and raised in Austria, who spent most of his career as a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder studying how people understand written and spoken language. He earned his doctorate from the University of Kansas in 1960 and went on to develop the Construction Integration model of comprehension, which describes reading as a process in which a reader builds several possible interpretations of a text in parallel and then settles on a coherent understanding by integrating them with existing knowledge. This model became a foundational reference for research on reading comprehension and discourse processing and influenced how researchers and educators think about teaching students to understand complex texts. Kintsch received the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Psychology in 1992 in recognition of this body of work. He died in 2023.
