Wilhelm von Humboldt

Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) was a Prussian statesman and philosopher whose brief tenure heading Prussia's education section, from 1809 to 1810, produced the most influential model of the modern research university and national school system in Western education. He founded the University of Berlin, now Humboldt University, in 1810 on the principle that teaching and research should be unified in one institution rather than separated, so that students learn through participation in original inquiry alongside their professors, an idea now called the Humboldtian model. Beyond the university, he built a graded public-instruction system running from elementary schools through secondary Gymnasien to university level, introduced standardized state examinations and school inspections, and created a dedicated ministry department to oversee curricula. His educational philosophy of Bildung held that education should cultivate a student's full character and reasoning rather than train narrow vocational skills, an ideal that spread from Prussia into the United States, Japan and other national school systems.
