Feminist pedagogy is a body of classroom practice, developed from second-wave feminist theory and women's studies programs from the 1970s onward, that treats the classroom's own power structure as itself a subject of critical attention, favoring shared authority between teacher and students, collaborative rather than competitive learning, and validation of personal experience as a legitimate source of knowledge alongside formal texts. It grew out of, and remains most closely associated with, university women's studies and gender studies teaching, though its methods have since informed broader discussion of classroom power and voice.
