Multicultural Education

Equity and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Multicultural education is a set of educational strategies developed to provide students with knowledge about the histories, cultures and contributions of diverse groups, promoting inclusion, diversity, democracy and critical thought. James A. Banks, a leading theorist and former president of the National Council for the Social Studies and the American Educational Research Association, argued that citizenship education must be transformed to address deepening racial, ethnic, cultural, language and religious diversity. It complements the atlas's already-live, narrower Culturally Relevant Pedagogy entry as a distinct, broader movement. Facts

Most Effective For
Its leading theorist James A. Banks held that citizenship education itself must be transformed by this approach in response to deepening racial, ethnic, cultural, language and religious diversity within nation-states, a broader claim than the atlas's narrower, already-live Culturally Relevant Pedagogy entry makes. 1
Central Question
Should curriculum and teaching approaches be reshaped so that students of every gender, cultural, ethnic and language background have an equal opportunity to learn, rather than assimilating them into one dominant culture's canon? 1
