Founded in 1887 as a teacher-training school responding to the social and economic changes of American industrialisation, Teachers College affiliated with Columbia University in 1898 and became its Faculty of Education. It was the academic home of John Dewey, who taught philosophy at Columbia and education at Teachers College from 1904 until his retirement in 1930, and during its first decades it launched some of the earliest American programs in educational psychology, comparative and international education, and special education.
