William Chandler Bagley (1874-1946) was an American professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the leading founder of educational essentialism. Reacting against progressive education, he articulated the essentialist position in his April 1938 Essentialist's Platform, calling for well-qualified teachers, community-transmitted values, and academic standards of accuracy, thoroughness and effort.
