A university in Bologna, Italy, conventionally dated to 1088 and recognized as the oldest university in the Western world to have operated continuously since its founding. It became the leading centre for the study of canon and civil law in the 12th and 13th centuries, drawing students from across Europe, and is credited with the first use of the word universitas to describe a self-governing corporation of students and masters.
