The Bologna Process is the intergovernmental initiative, launched when education ministers of 29 European countries signed the Bologna Declaration in June 1999, to make European higher-education systems comparable and compatible within a European Higher Education Area. It introduced the three-cycle degree structure of bachelor, master and doctorate, the ECTS credit system for recognizing study across borders, and cooperative quality assurance. It remains an ongoing process, its membership now well beyond the original signatories.
