Contract grading is an academic grading practice in which students and an instructor agree on the terms by which a grade is earned, based on measures such as completed assignments, labor, learning objectives, mastery, or self-assessment, rather than an instructor unilaterally judging finished work against a fixed syllabus. Because students negotiate the terms with the instructor, it is discussed in writing studies as an alternative to traditional grading, and research has associated it with improved perceptions of fairness, reduced stress, and a greater sense of student agency.
