Object Lessons

Object lessons name Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi's principle of Anschauung: children form clear concepts through direct concrete observation of real things before, and as the necessary foundation for, verbal and abstract instruction. At his Yverdon school, established 1805, children examined the form, number and name of real objects in graded sequences running from concrete to abstract, simple to complex, known to unknown. Pestalozzi himself resisted rigid systematization, prioritizing the child's wellbeing, yet nineteenth-century followers codified the approach into a mechanical object-teaching method, an irony historians of education have long noted. Its core insight is absorbed into mainstream early-childhood practice from Montessori materials to mathematics manipulatives.
