ASSURE Model

Instructional Design and Curriculum Frameworks

The ASSURE model is an instructional-design model built around planning and delivering a lesson that makes systematic use of media and technology, developed by Robert Heinich, Michael Molenda, James D. Russell and Sharon E. Smaldino and set out in their textbook Instructional Media and Technologies for Learning. Its name is an acronym for the steps a teacher follows in sequence: Analyze learners, to understand their characteristics, existing knowledge and learning needs before planning a lesson; State objectives, writing specific, measurable statements of what learners should be able to do afterward; Select methods, media and materials suited to those objectives and to the learners already analyzed; Utilize media and materials, previewing and preparing them and rehearsing their use in the actual lesson; Require learner participation, building in activities that let learners practice and receive feedback rather than remain passive; and Evaluate and revise, assessing whether the objectives were met and using that assessment to improve the lesson for future use. Unlike broader instructional-systems-design models meant to guide the design of an entire course or curriculum, the ASSURE model is aimed specifically at classroom teachers planning individual lessons that incorporate instructional media, making it one of the more commonly taught models in teacher-preparation and educational-technology courses.
