Knowledge Organiser

A knowledge organiser is a teaching tool made up of a single sheet of paper, usually A4, divided into a grid, with each cell in the grid pairing a term with a short explanation. Joe Kirby, a teacher at Michaela Community School, introduced the idea in a 2015 blog post, arguing for the value of putting the key facts of a unit of study on one page rather than spread across many resources. A typical knowledge organiser picks out five to ten core concepts for a unit and lists a definition for each alongside it. Some schools, such as Swindon Academy, gather knowledge organisers into booklets each term so that both students and parents know what is coming up in lessons, and some research suggests the format works better for subjects like history than for English language teaching.
