Thematic Learning

Instructional Design and Curriculum Frameworks

Thematic learning, or thematic teaching, is the selecting and highlighting of a theme through an instructional unit, module, course or set of courses. It is often interdisciplinary, drawing out the relationship of knowledge across academic disciplines and everyday life, with themes taking the form of topics or overarching questions. It is closely related to interdisciplinary or integrated instruction and to topic, project or phenomenon based learning, is most commonly associated with elementary and middle school team teaching though it is equally used in secondary schools and with adult learners, and appears in second and foreign language teaching under the related name theme based instruction. The approach assumes students learn best when they can connect new information holistically to the wider curriculum and to their own lives, experiences and communities.
