Board Certification (Medical Specialty)

Professional Doctorates and Practice Licenses

Board certification is a credential demonstrating mastery of advanced knowledge and skill in a medical or other professional specialty, awarded after passing written, oral, practical or simulator based examinations set by a specialised professional board. It is generally not a legal requirement to practise, but many hospitals, insurers and employers require or strongly prefer it, particularly in medicine, where a physician typically needs a graduate medical degree and years of specialty training before sitting the exam. Many boards also require periodic recertification, commonly every seven to ten years, to confirm that a certificate holder's knowledge remains current.
