A high school diploma is the standard credential marking completion of secondary education in the United States and Canada, awarded after four years of study spanning grades nine through twelve. Individual high schools issue the diploma, but the specific coursework, grade and, in some jurisdictions, standardized exit-examination requirements are set at the state, provincial or local level, so requirements can vary considerably even within one country. Despite that local variation, a properly awarded diploma is universally recognised across North America as proof of secondary school completion.
