FAQs

Who founded the University of Bologna?

It had no known founder: it grew from the informal initiative of a few students.

No single founder or founding charter is known. The university's own history says the Studium of Bologna was not established at the behest of a sovereign or an organised group of teachers, but was the outcome of the spontaneous and informal initiative of a few students. For that reason the exact founding date cannot be determined, and 1088 is only conventionally treated as the year of its founding. The poet Carducci, speaking at the celebrations of its eighth centenary in 1888, admitted that the centenary itself was artificial.
