The Zone of Proximal Development is Lev Vygotsky's name for the gap between what a learner can do alone and what the same learner can do with guidance from a more knowledgeable other. Developed in the early 1930s and published in English posthumously in Mind in Society in 1978, it is the centerpiece of his sociocultural account of development, in which learning is social before it is internalized. It shifted assessment thinking from static measures of independent performance toward a learner's potential under assistance, and it is the concept that instructional scaffolding operationalizes.
