Bengali poet, philosopher, composer and educationist, the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1913). Rejecting rote, colonial-style schooling, he built an experimental school at his family's ashram in Santiniketan in 1901 and expanded it in 1921 into Visva-Bharati University, envisioned as a place where the best of Indian and world cultures could meet as equals.
