Theodore Sizer

Founders of Named Pedagogical Methods and Movements

Theodore Ryland Sizer, known as Ted Sizer (June 23, 1932 to October 21, 2009), was a leader of educational reform in the United States and the founder, later President Emeritus, of the Essential Schools Movement. He was known for challenging longstanding practices and assumptions about how American secondary schools function. Beginning in the late 1970s he worked with hundreds of high schools, studying the development and design of the American educational system, which led to his major work Horace's Compromise in 1984. In that same year he founded the Coalition of Essential Schools, built on the principles set out in that book.
