Smith College is a private liberal arts women's college in Northampton, Massachusetts, established through the bequest of Sophia Smith, chartered in 1871 and opened in 1875 with 14 students and 6 faculty members. Smith wanted to give her gender, in her own words, means and facilities for education equal to those afforded to young men, and the college is now a member of the historic Seven Sisters colleges and of the Five College Consortium. It was the first women's college to join the NCAA and the first historically women's college to offer an undergraduate engineering degree, and it enrolls roughly 2,915 students across 50 academic departments and programs.
