Deschooling

Deschooling is a movement and body of critical thought, most associated with the philosopher Ivan Illich's 1971 book Deschooling Society, that argues compulsory schooling as an institution does more harm than good and calls for society to be reorganized around voluntary, decentralized forms of learning rather than mandatory attendance at age-graded schools. It influenced later alternative education movements, including some strands of homeschooling and unschooling, though it remains a minority position relative to mainstream education policy.
