The 4C/ID model, short for the four-component instructional design model, is an instructional design framework developed by the Dutch educational psychologist Jeroen van Merriënboer and presented in his 1997 book Training Complex Cognitive Skills, created specifically to design instruction for complex learning that integrates knowledge, skills and attitudes into coordinated real-world performance. The model organizes instruction around four interconnected components: learning tasks, whole, authentic, meaningful tasks based on real-life problems that give learners practice in the complete performance; supportive information, explanatory material that helps learners with the non-routine, problem-solving aspects of a task; procedural information, precise, just-in-time instructions provided while learners work on the routine aspects of a task; and part-task practice, additional repeated practice on a specific routine sub-skill needed until it becomes fast and automatic. The model was developed partly as a reaction against instructional approaches that taught component skills separately and hoped learners would later combine them on their own, arguing instead that complex, real-world tasks should stay whole and authentic throughout training while targeted support and practice are layered around them.
Facts
Core ClaimThe 4C/ID model designs instruction for complex skills around four components, learning tasks, supportive information, procedural information, and part-task practice, integrated around authentic whole tasks rather than isolated subskills. 1 FAQs
What are the four components of the 4C/ID model?
Learning tasks; supportive information; procedural information; part-task practice.
The 4C/ID model is characterized by four components: learning tasks, supportive information, procedural information and part-task practice. The name itself comes from the four components, and the model addresses how to teach complex skills so that learners can apply them to real problems.
